Nami Takahashi: The Language of White Porcelain


Nami Takahashi is one of this country's most spotlighted young ceramicists. The crisp edges and undulating forms of her pieces create rhythms of light and shade that are unparalleled in their beauty. Fruits consistently provide motifs for her works, which are predominantly asymmetrical, resulting from a time-consuming process in which multiple components are individually slip-cast. The lines and mouths of the slip-cast vessels are modified manually, making each form unique. The uniformly white bodies show a myriad of different faces depending on the viewing angle and the shadows cast by surface shapes, contributing to the unique appeal of Takahashi's work.
After graduating from Musashino Art University, Takahashi studied at the Istituto Statale D'arte G.Ballardini Faenza,Italia. "At art university, coursework centered on functional pieces with uncomplicated shapes, so for once, I wanted to remove myself from all that," explains the artist about her decision to study in Faenza. Here she produced a series of symmetrical ceramic sculptures titled Frutti ("fruits"), which introduced her to slip-casting. The time spent studying in Italy provided the artist with an excellent opportunity for exploring her own style of ceramic art.
"My pieces leave nothing to chance. They depend mostly on my own artistic sensibility and ability to create intended shapes. Daily production aims to create cool, beautiful forms capitalizing on the exquisite, noble texture of white porcelain," says the artist about her new creative foray, which is not without considerable challenges. The artist, however, is determined to "stick to both slip-casting and white porcelain," no matter how difficult or grueling the process may be.
A new development in Takahashi's white porcelain pieces began to take shape from around 2012, when she exhibited tea ceremony ceramics for the first time in her career at Kakiden Gallery, following the advice of Japanese ceramics expert Seizo Hayashiya, who encouraged her to produce tea ceremony utensils back in 2010. Takahashi's interest in tea ceremony ceramics dates back to her early days in Faenza, where she visited the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche to see the RAKU, A Dynasty of Japanese Ceramists,exhibition then touring Europe. In 1999 she was deeply inspired by a solo exhibition of Sueharu Fukami on view at the same museum. She started taking tea ceremony classes after returning to Japan, though this did not immediately result in the production of tea ceremony ceramics. In 2016, four years after she had embarked on the production of tea ceramics in earnest, Takahashi's Hakuji Mizusashi (white porcelain cold-water jar) received the 63ht Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, New Face Award. Although humble in size, this mizusashi had a coolness and freshness to its shape, as well as remarkable beauty in its form and in the shadows cast on the surface by its irregular "ridges." She has since been extremely prolific in this area, as her biography shows.
The present exhibition showcases white porcelain works--small pieces produced between 2003 and 2007, plus tea ceremony utensils: a tea bowl, cold-water jar, and tea jar. The vessels have fluted surfaces with bolder ridges than previous works, hinting at yet more new developments to come from this exceptional artist.
